The data leak happened on 27 December. Details about the data leak have been posted on a hacker forum, which is yet to be identified. It was posted by someone named ‘Shadow Hacker’, which is a fictitious name.

The same hacker group is also claiming that they have managed to get hold of official email accounts of many people in government departments. As of now, there is no information on how the hacker group accessed the IRCTC data. The cyber security firms are yet to reveal the authenticity of the latest data breach.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. In 2019, a similar breach took place and data of around 9 million people was leaked online. Later, the government announced that under the Revised Data Protection Bill, fines of up to Rs 500 crore would be imposed for data breaches. However, that doesn’t seem to have slowed down the rate of data breaches that are occurring.

Users are advised not to share their personal data with any unknown person or account, even if that person is close to you. Hackers have many tricks to steal users’ money and hence people are advised to be careful, especially those doing online transactions.
