The government blocked 104 YouTube channels, 45 videos, 4 Facebook accounts, 3 Instagram accounts, 5 Twitter handles and six websites for spreading misinformation and endangering national security. Why were these channels and websites blocked?
These directions were issued in accordance with the provisions of Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which empowers the Central Government to issue directions for public access to false messages and content in the interest of India’s sovereignty and integrity, defense of India Is. , security of the State, friendly relations with foreign states or public order or to prevent any offense relating to such matters. “The government has taken action under these rules and we will not hesitate to take such action in future if required,” Thakur said.
The Minister further informed that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has blocked 1643 YouTube URLs during 2021-2022 (up to October, 2022) under the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking Access to Information by Public) Rules.
